Although preventing falls is important at any age, it is increasingly important as we age. Many older adults never fully recover from falls, living with chronic pain and disability, a loss of independence and/or early admission to nursing homes. This loss of independence affects family members and caregivers and may result in a variety of work, stress, or financial issues.

With the older adult population increasing in Clay and Platte Counties, preventing falls will be an increasingly important health issue for the entire community.

The Senior Falls Prevention Coalition of Clay and Platte Counties invites YOU to Stand up to falls!

See the Coalition's new website: www.seniorfallsprevention.org

Falls Prevention Awareness Day is the 1st Day of Fall each year.

5 simple things you can do to reduce your risk of falls:

  1. Exercise regularly. Exercise programs that increase strength and improve balance are good.
  2. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medicines to reduce side effects and dizziness.
  3. Have your eyes checked at least once a year.
  4. Improve the lighting in your home.
  5. Reduce the hazards in your home that can lead to falls.

Don't forget to talk to your family and friends!
